Demeke calls on Ethiopians across the United States to campaign for the passage of HR 6600 and S39999.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen has called on the Ethiopian Diaspora in the United States to work hard to prevent the passage of the most dangerous bills in the US House of Representatives.

Demeke held talks with community leaders, Task Force, civic leaders and representatives from across the United States yesterday.

HR 6600 BILL NOT ONLY UNDERMINES ETHIOPIAN-US FRIENDSHIP, BUT ALSO THREATENS HORN OF AFRICA PEACE

He said the draft legislation HR 6600 and S 3199, drafted by the US Congress and the Senate, were conspiracies to seize the sovereignty of Ethiopians through blood sacrifice.

He said Ethiopia's security, economic and political relations with other countries would be paralyzed by other forces and paralyzed.

He also said that the most divisive and unconstitutional laws that alienate the Diaspora, including our low-income people, are to cut ties with their motherland and relatives.

Demeke thanked the Diaspora for their unwavering patriotism in overcoming the international diplomatic pressure that our country has been facing for the past year and a half.

He said the steps taken by the government are in the forefront of the country and will be based on lasting peace and unity, adding that he will never compromise on Ethiopia's sovereignty.

ETHIOPIAN CITIZENS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE (EZEMA) PRESS RELEASE

"Ethiopia is always ready to strengthen its long-standing relationship with the United States," he said.

Ambassador Fitsum Arega, for his part, called on the Diaspora to reach out to local government candidates by phone, email, signatures and in person to explain the violations of the draft laws.

According to the US Embassy in Addis Ababa, participants in the discussion pledged to work together more than ever before as the draft laws endanger the unity and continuity of the country, not the government and the party.
