Tewolde headed the airline as its chief executive officer for 11 years. He has also served the airline for 37 years.

Tewolde Gebre Mariam, chief executive officer of Ethiopian Airlines, emailed this letter to his staff.

"As you know, I have been suffering from health problems for about a year now. As a result, I have been working in the United States for the past five months. I can't continue.

So I decided to retire early and focus on my treatment.

Of the 11 years and three months that I have been active in various fields for 37 years, it has not been an easy decision to part with my beloved and shiny airline.

However, health comes first and I need to focus on full recovery.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have helped me lead our precious airline in its exciting development agenda. I am so grateful for your commitment, perseverance and effort. You (the 17,000 strong workforce) have shown the world what is impossible and have astonished the entire aviation industry by all means.

We have exceeded our own 2025 goals, which were previously considered unattainable by industry experts.

Together, over the past decade, we have made history by increasing the airline's annual revenue from $ 1 billion to 4.5 billion, from 33 aircraft to 130 aircraft, from 3 million passengers to 12 million passengers (pre-copy) and more. We have quadrupled the airline by all means. With over $ 700 million worth of essential infrastructure, we have built Africa's largest hotel, cargo terminal and shops, aviation academy, full flight simulators, etc.

Our persistence, perseverance, perseverance and resilience in the face of the worst of the world's worst pandemic has left the airline with a historic profit margin that has allowed any employee to work without any deductions or pay cuts.

. We were great. I ask that you give the same support to my successor and continue your efforts and let our beloved airline shine through. Thanks again. I wish you all the best, health and happiness. Thank you. "
