The Chinese telecom company ZTE concluded installation work for 1,234 kilometers of optical ground wire, also known as OPGW lines, in Ethiopia. The contract for the installation, which was worth 37 million USD, was signed on May 2013 between the Chinese telecom giant and Ethiopian Electric Power.
The line stretches from the capital city, Addis Ababa, to the northern part of Ethiopia. The line will connect substations such as Meqelle, Ashegoda, Bahir Dar, Alamata and Addis Ababa.
The line, according to Fortune, is composed of cables for grounding as well as communication. Basically OPGW cable is said to protect cables from lightning.
The just concluded project is part of the national grid infrastructure and development improvement project.
