The President of Italy Sergio Mattarella on Wednesday said his country was backing Ethiopia’s bid for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.The Italian leader told his Ethiopian counterpart, Dr. Mulatu Teshome that his government appreciates Ethiopia’s role in combating terrorism, helping to maintain peace and security as well as a strong commitment to accommodate refugees.
“Since Italy believes that Ethiopia deserves a seat at the UNSC and taking into account its huge contributions to peace and stability, it should push for the fulfillment of this goal� President Mattarella vowed.
Mattarella promised that Italy would provide capacity building and technical assistance to help Ethiopia improve the quality of its export and enhance its competitiveness in the European market.
Meanwhile the Italian president also visited refugee camps in Gambella State of Ethiopia where more than 250, 000 South Sudanese refugees are sheltered.
He pledged €630, 000 to support educational services at the end of his visit.
