The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh, Babili Mansa met the Gambian community in Ethiopia on the sidelines of the recently concluded AU Summit in that country.
“Stay united and live as one family, you are our mirror in any international institution that you work,” President Jammeh told them. He thanked them for meeting him and further advised them to continue to live as Gambians.
“Work together as a family, Allah designated tribes for us to work together. Remember that your country will be judged by your performance, and that credit would not come back to your country, but instead they would say it is the institution, may God forbid it is only if you do anything wrong when the criticism comes to the country. I am always proud to see you. Some of you have been here for a very long time serving in international organisations and all what you hear is good news about you; that is commendable; keep it up,” Professor Jammeh affirmed.
“I never heard any complaint about Gambians by the law authorities here in Ethiopia, so thank God for 21 years I have never heard any complaint. I am very much proud of you and I have seen also that you care about African integration and so those of you who are integrating, congratulations. Thank you for laying the foundation for African integration; it is very important for us to understand each other’s culture, blend with each other. Racism or ethnic intolerance comes to an end when we inter-marry and so pioneers of The Gambia-Ethiopia integration congratulations and we are proud of you,” he concluded.
Kalifa Manneh, who spoke on behalf of Gambians in Ethiopia welcomed the Gambian leader and delegation to Addis Ababa and further thanked the President for taking time to meet them. “We are proud of you,” he told the President.
According to him, some of them have been in Ethiopia for so many years living with their families. “What you have given us during your last visit here is being put to good use and the community is benefiting from it,” he added.
In appreciation of the community’s proper management of the money donated to them by the President in 2012, Professor Jammeh again gave them some cash for the welfare of their children.
