The European Union has mobilized €170 million in emergency support for Ethiopia to tackle the ‘El Niño’ induced drought, Vice President of the European Commission Kristalina Georgieva announced on Wednesday.A statement by the EU said the support which comes from the European Development Fund will strengthen life-saving emergency assistance and increase resilience in the horn of Africa nation.
“The Ethiopian government is making enormous effort to tackle the impact of one of the worst droughts ever witnessed. It is showing strong leadership and will to protect its population and it is also showing remarkable generosity with its open-border policy� she said.
“The coordinated effort of the government, donors and partners is an example of how a common response can deliver results. In this crucial year for the humanitarian system, Ethiopia has an encouraging story to tell� she added.
“The current situation in the country requires our full attention� she said adding that the Ethiopian Humanitarian Requirements Document shows that the needs are huge.
“The government has done a great effort by committing $380 million. The EU has committed $185 million in joint humanitarian and development funding. Because only through a comprehensive action can we tackle a multidimensional, recurrent crisis. We must all strengthen our commitment.
The EU will continue exploring how to strengthen its response. We hope that others will do so� she further pointed out.
“The global scale of El Nià±o requires global and effective actions. It requires a global and bold response. We have a collective responsibility to act now,â€� she posited.
