ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has certified entrepreneurship trainers to become national master trainers.
The entrepreneurship trainers are drawn from the private sector and academia and they are from Addis Ababa, and other regions including, Oromia, Amhara, Tigray and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' State (SNNPRS) of Ethiopia.
A ceremony was held to certify the trainers on Friday in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, whereby the UN Development Program (UNDP) and UNCTAD have forged partnership.
The certified trainers, who are working with the Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) in the country, are expected to support efforts to scale up the entrepreneurship development program across regions.
EDC, a center that implements the Entrepreneurship Development Program, and launched by Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn in 2013, works under the auspices of the Ministry of Urban Development, Housing and Construction (MoUDHC) and the Federal Micro and Small Enterprises Development Agency (FeMSEDA) of Ethiopia.
Highlighting UNDP's partnership with UNCTAD that underpins Friday's celebration, Samuel Bwalya, UNDP Country Director, noted that the certification process helps Ethiopia build a strong national resource to tap into.
"The certification process is not only personally upgrades the competencies and skills of our entrepreneurship trainers, but even more importantly helps Ethiopia build a strong national resource to tap into," said Bwalya.
"The national trainers will specifically contribute to improving the capacity of Ethiopia's micro, small and even medium and large enterprises become more competitive both in the local and global markets," added the Country Director.
He also expressed UNDP's commitment to supporting Ethiopia's entrepreneurs complements.
Bwalya reiterated that the certification event on Friday is a result of UNDP's solid partnership with UNCTAD that has put together a team of international experts and trainers for this purpose.
"Our partnership with UNCTAD will continue to grow as we work towards helping build our national trainers to become internationally recognized world-class entrepreneurship trainers," said the Country Director.
Since its launch in 2013, the Entrepreneurship Programme, implemented has made significant changes in the lives of over 23, 000 Ethiopian entrepreneurs.
"However, we still have a long way to go ahead of us," said the Country Director.
"I urge you not to be complacent but to take this certificate as a launch pad for further working on improving your skills and ultimately your contributions to build a new breed of Ethiopian entrepreneurs," he said.
