Ethiopia’s President Mulatu Teshome call a more strengthened Diaspora participation to sustain the overall development of the country, the Ethiopian Herald reported on Thursday.The daily newspaper quoted the president as saying that attention has given to foreign relation activities to enable the Diaspora actively engaged in image building and take part in the ongoing development.
“The government has decided to organize a Diaspora festival at a national level every year so as to improve their contribution to the development,� said the president while opening the first Ethiopian Diaspora Day on Wednesday.
The paper went to say that activities are well underway to mobilize the Diaspora in terms of supporting mega projects and involving in direct investment.
The paper quoted the president as saying that the Ethiopian Diaspora community purchased 600 million birr ($30 million) bonds for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam as more than 3,100 others are undertaking investment projects in different parts of the country.
Ethiopians living abroad have sent more than 24.3 billion Birr remittances to their country over the past 24 years, the paper wrote.
“The festival will contribute to strengthen the contribution of the Diaspora to the country’s overall development through direct investment, knowledge and technology transfer among others,â€� the state owned newspaper said.
