The Amhara Students' Association announced that it has called for protests in all towns of Amhara State tomorrow. The Bahir Dar city administration has stated that it will not recognize the planned demonstration.

The results of the 2013 Grade 12 exams have caused a great deal of controversy among parents, students, teachers and institutions.

The Amhara Regional State Education Bureau sent an 11-member inquiry team to the Ministry of Education and wrote a letter to extend the university admission until the students' grievances were finally resolved.

The Higher Institutions Forum in Amhara Region also shared the students' complaints that the exams should be rescheduled or that students should take another exam.

Zonal education departments in the Amhara region also complained about the results and procedures.

The Amhara Students' Union, for its part, said a peaceful demonstration will be held in all towns in the Amhara region tomorrow, urging the students to correct their "wrong" results.

The association's president, Eshetu Getnet, told Deutsche Welle the purpose of the protest.

"This year's 12th grade exams are about exam content and university entrance results. The exam content is one that does not focus on the current context of the region and the situation in the country.

According to the president, students in East Amhara, in particular, have been in the war, psychologically abused and have not been given enough time for exams.

Eshetu told Deutsche Welle: "The other purpose of the protest is to protest against the fact that there are more than 600 students who have scored less than 100 points. The Students' Union has also asked students and youth of all regions to share their grievances.

The student president also announced that the rally will be held on Sunday.

The Bahir Dar City Administration Security Council said in a statement that it would not recognize the protest on March 26, 2022.

In a statement, the city administration criticized the Amhara Students' Union for calling for a peaceful demonstration as the government struggled to resolve the issue.

"After the Bahir Dar City Administration Security Council consulted and discussed the issue, the city administration did not recognize the demonstration as it is more harmful than beneficial, given the current situation in the city, region and Bahir Dar," he said.

The city administration also warned that the city would not be held responsible for any irregularities.

Our correspondent in Bahir Dar, Alemnew Mekonnen, reported that the issue of Grade 12 exam results was recently debated at the Amhara Regional State Council meeting in Bahir Dar.

Tefera Feisa, Deputy Director General of the National Examinations Agency, told Ethiopian Television that there were no errors during the correction, but that there were some problems during the test results analysis.
