Ethiopian-born actress nominated for Oscars for her role in 'Loving'

Ethiopia-born actress, Ruth Negga, has been nominated for the prestigious Oscars. She is nominated in the ‘Actress in a Leading Role,’ category for her role in the 2016 movie, Loving.

Ruth’s performances in the movie, ‘Loving,’ will pitch her against four other actresses for the award. The film she played in borders on the true life story of a Virginia couple who had to live through the days when inter-racial marriages were outlawed.

She was raised by her Irish mother after her Ethiopian father died in a motor accident when she was young. Other films she has starred in are Capital Letters (2004), Isolation and Breakfast on Pluto (2005), Warcraft (2016).

Her role in Loving, has won her other nominations aside the Academy Award for Best Actress. Other nominations include the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead, Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress, and a BAFTA Rising Star Award.

The film which was released in the United States last year was directed by Jeff Nichols who also wrote the screenplay. Ruth starred alongside Joel Edgerton as the main characters. Others in supporting roles included Marton Csokas, Nick Kroll and Michael Shannon.

Her competitors for the award include Isabelle Huppert (for her role in the fim ‘Elle’), Natalie Portman in ‘Jackie,’ Emma Stone in ‘La La Land,’ and Meryl Streep in ‘Florence Foster Jenkins.’

The big news from the announcement of nominations is that the film, “La La Land” got nominated in 14 categories as it bids for a record-equalling 14 Oscars.

The film has two nominations in the Best Original Song category, though, making it unlikely – but not impossible – that it will take home all of the statuettes.

The musical romance is also nominated in the coveted Best Picture category. New US President Donald Trump called her ‘over-rated’. But, it seems the Oscars committee disagreed. Meryl Streep, the most-nominated performer in Oscar history, is up for Best Actress for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins. German comedy Toni Erdmann is the frontrunner in the foreign language shortlist. The final ceremony in Los Angeles will take place on February 26 and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
