Golf team leaves for EAC challenge in Ethiopia

An eight-man Ugandan golf team left Monday for Ethiopia where they are going to defend the East African Challenge trophy.

Coach Amos Kamya is banking on the experience of the team that has seen them win back to back tournaments over the past two years to prevail in Addis Ababa.

“We are defending champions so expect us to play to retain our trophy. We have proved that we are a force to reckon with in the match play competitions, so I expect the boys to deliver because they are ready,” Kamya said.

“We have to ensure we win the doubles again because it always goes to the wire with our main rivals Kenya, so whoever wins the doubles stands a better chance,” Kamya noted.

A strong nine-man squad that includes the South African based pair of Ronald Otile and Daniel Baguma is set for the task at the par-70 Addis Ababa golf club.

Becca Mwanja who is making his second outing with the team is captain of the side comprised of rookie Rodwel Gaita, Joseph Cwinya-ai, and experienced players Adolf Muhumuza, Ronald Rugumayo, Martin Ochaya. Herman Mutebi is a reserve on the Amos Kamya coached team.

The match play competition tees off on October 25 with an official practice round today, before the main event, October 26-29.

Six Countries will take part namely Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.

Last year the Uganda team collected 18.5 points to win back to back East African Golf Challenge titles for the second year running in Rwanda, just like in 2014 where they edged Kenya, again, by a point.
