Ethiopian Sugar Corporation (ESC) has announced the 2 Omo Kuraz sugar factories are set to commence production by the coming January.
This is the fourth time the Corporation has set a date for commencement of production while the previous 3 had failed to yield any result.
The 2 facilities, Omo Kuraz I and Omo Kuraz II, have a total capacity of crushing 24,000 tons of sugar cane. They also produce the same amount of sugar yield.
If the project goes operational it is expected to create job opportunities for more than 30,000 people.
According to Fortune currently there are 6 operating sugar factories in Ethiopia. Upon the conclusion of construction of all sugar projects, the number of public enterprise sugar factories will reach 10.
The Omo Kuraz sugar project, which has a total of 4 factories, is located in South Omo, Maji and Keffa Zones of the Southern Nations, Nationalities & People State.
ESC is aiming to supply more than 72 million quintals of sugar in the current fiscal year.
