Addis Ababa, 01 July, 2016(WIC)- The UN Assistant Secretary-General and United Nations Development Programme Assistant Administrator Ms Izumi Nakamitsu is travelling to Ethiopia from 3-6 July 2016 on the first leg of her two-country visit to Africa that will include Uganda.
According to a press release sent to Walta Information Center, While in Ethiopia, Ms. Nakamitsu will meet with local communities who benefited from a successful project to help them adapt to climate change. Through the Promoting Autonomous Adaptation project, communities adopted new technologies such as automatic weather stations, planted drought-resistant crops and harvested rainwater for irrigation.
Ms Nakamitsu will also meet with senior government officials, development partners and other stakeholders to discuss Ethiopia’s approach towards combating changing climate challenges and disaster risk management. Ms Nakamitsu’s visit will highlight the ongoing global discussions around the linkage between the humanitarian-development nexus and building the resilience of local communities.
There will also be a field visit to the Promoting Autonomous Adaptation (PAA) project site. The PAA supports local smallholder farmers in four regions to adapt to climate change through piloting a range of effective coping mechanisms. The intervention was showcased by Ethiopia at the recent COP 21 in Paris as a best practice.Read more here
