An additional nine children snatched by heavily armed South Sudanese Murle tribesmen last month in a cross-border raid in Gambella regional state, Ethiopia, have been recovered on Wednesday. With 44 kidnapped children returned in two batches earlier this week, the number of them reunited with their communities in Gambella has reached 53.
Some 66 others are still being held captive by armed members of the Murle tribe in neighbouring South Sudan.
Top military officers from Ethiopia and South Sudan as well as leading figures from Gambella State welcomed the children upon their arrival at the region’s main airport.
The government of Ethiopia said a negotiated settlement of the matter would be maintained until all the kidnapped children and looted cattle are returned.
Getachew Reda, Ethiopia’s Minister for Government Communication Affairs Office, emphasized on Wednesday that bringing back the children alive and punish those responsible for their abduction is the main goal of the government.
