School-feeding programs for Ethiopia’s drought-hit areas

Ethiopia has launched school-feeding programs benefiting about 1.2 million students in drought-hit parts of the country where access to relief aid had been difficult, according to the Education minister.Presenting his ministry’s eight-month performance report to parliament on Friday, Shiferaw Shigute said efforts were made to reduce school dropouts in areas affected by the drought by providing meals and educational materials for 1.2 million students at a cost of $11.5 million.
The program has reportedly contributed to raising the number of students going to schools as tens of thousands of students dropped out due to the El Nino-induced drought in the country.
Children are at the forefront of those seriously affected in the country’s worst drought in fifty years, with six million said to be at risk.
According to reports issued by the country’s Disaster Prevention and Preparedness office 10.2 million Ethiopians are in need of emergency food aid with $1.4 billion required to address the catastrophe in the short run
