Peace talks to put an end to the 12 years of the conflict in the Sudanese region of Darfur have commenced on Sunday between the Sudanese government and two armed groups of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudan Liberation Movement – Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM) in the Ethiopian city of Deber Ziet.
The talks, the second of its kind, are the last round of the “informal talks” that started in November 2015.
The three parties have confirmed their readiness to engage in flexible and fruitful talks.
The deputy head of Sudanese diplomatic mission in Addis Ababa, Ambassador Hamza Omer Hassan told the Sudan News Agency that the two parties have begun the discussions on Saturday, adding that this round of informal discussions is the continuation of last November’s talks.
According to the AU mediation, the cessation of hostilities and the ensuring humanitarian access to those in need before the holding of a preparatory meeting to the national dialogue with the government and the other opposition forces has topped the agenda.
The SLM-MM has confirmed in a statement seen by APA that this is the beginning of the talks, adding that the joint rebel delegation which is led by Minnawi has reached the venue in Ethiopia.
Meanwhile, the state news agency has also confirmed that the government delegation was in Addis Ababa since Saturday night.
Ambassador Hamza Omer Hassan confirmed the arrival of the head of the Darfur office Amin Hassan Omer who is also the government chief negotiator on Darfur.
