MPs should allow their cooks and canteen employees to go for benchmarking trips, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has said.
Muturi sparked comedy at the Assembly on Wednesday when he noted the staffers would learn more on the trips than the Catering and Health Club Committee.
Committee vice chairperson Benjamin Lagat had told the House that some members had travelled to Ethiopia, the Netherlands and India in a bid to improve services.
The Speaker questioned MPs travels abroad to learn the services saying Utalii College was sufficient.
"As for the benchmarking trips allow your staff, especially those in the kitchen to travel, not you as members," he said eliciting laughter.
Muturi said the Parliamentary Service Commission will meet on Friday to address issues raised by MPs and their staff members.
Majority leader Aden Duale asked Muturi, who chairs the PSC, to intervene as "the food here is pathetic, the toilets are not clean, and the tea and snacks taste like they are not fresh".
"We need to see change or else we will disband the committee when we come back from recess."
Deputy Minority leader Jakoyo Midiwo said the PSC had failed the MPs and their staff by not catering to their welfare.
"Speaker, please deal with members of your commission. There are some things that are not good... We will be revealing them after the recess," he said.
