Ethiopia has announced that it has joined the Northern Corridor Integration Project Partner States on Thursday, the Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement.Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Tedros Adhanom made the announcement at the meeting of the Northern Corridor Integration Project in Kigali, Rwanda.
At the 12th Northern Corridor Integration Project Summit that started on Monday (December 7) in Kigali, Ethiopia joined the four partner states of Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda as an observer.
Dr. Tedros noted that Ethiopia had participated in the six previous meetings of Northern Corridor Integration Project, in successive Summits as an observer and had always expressed its keenness in possible partnerships and involvements in the regional projects.
The Foreign Minister added that Ethiopia attached great importance to the agenda of regional economic integration. It had clearly indicated this in its Foreign Policy and Strategy and had also demonstrated this practically in the major ongoing development projects it had launched itself.
Speaking about which specific projects Ethiopia might chose to engage, Dr Tedros said its initial interest would be in the areas of “the Standard Gauge Railway, power generation and transmission, and the inter-connectivity projects’ implementation. â€�
Over the first two days of the Summit, senior regional officials, heads of private sectors and permanent secretaries of the NCIP countries of Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda reviewed progress in the 14 earmarked projects.
