The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Ethiopia decreased by 90 percent, the country’s Federal HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office (HAPCO) said on Friday.However, more than 24,000 new infections were registered last year, the office said at a press conference organized here on Friday in connection with World AIDS Day to be commemorated on 1st December.
This year’s World AIDS Day will be marked in Hawassa town, SNNP Regional State, with the theme “Getting to Zero, Let’s Attain our Renaissance,â€� said Dr Alemu Ano, Deputy Director General of HAPCO.
Hawassa was chosen as it is a hub for higher learning institutions and popular tourist destination in the country.
According to Dr Alemu, the office plans to end the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2030.
