Ethiopia is set to approve a draft proclamation on overseas employment within the next two weeks; the country’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs said on Thursday. The ministry said the new overseas employment proclamation takes in to account bilateral agreements Ethiopia entered with countries of the employers and requires citizens who want to labor abroad to undergo trainings and be evaluated before departure.
The country’s foreign labor proclamation came in to force in 1998 with the aim of ensuring the benefit and safety of Ethiopian workers in foreign land.
Though the previous proclamation was amended in 2009 it had not been able to bridge the gaps concerning foreign labor, the ministry said.
State Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Nyadamin Reta said the new proclamation is crucial as it considers bilateral agreements between Ethiopia and the countries of employment.
According to the minister, Illegal agents have been taking advantage of the gaps of the previous proclamation and have been illegally recruiting unqualified and unskilled laborers.
Ethiopia temporarily banned its people from traveling abroad for work to safeguard their well-being.
