The Addis Ababa electrified light rail transit will start operation next Sunday, the Ethiopian Railway Corporation said.
The 16.9-km Piassa-Kaliti route will begin operation on Sunday, while the 17-km Ayat-Torhailoch route will commence service next month, Dr. Engineer Getachew Betru, CEO of Ethiopian Railways Corporation, said.
The Corporation also revealed the tariffs for the rail transit.
Accordingly, the tariff for 4kms distance is 2 birr, while 8.8kms distance costs 4 birr. The cost for 17km (full journey) is 6 birr.
The light rail transit has a total length of 34.25 km (North-South line 16.9 km and East-West line 17.35 km).
The construction of the double track electrified light rail transit project was launched in December 2011 and was completed in January 2015.
It began trial operation in February 2, 2015 in the presence of senior government officials, including Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.
