Ryan Tubridy has begun his week-long visit to Ethiopia with the aid agency GOAL and he has described his first day as `humbling', adding his 'eyes and mind have been opened'.
"This is my first visit to Africa and, obviously, to Ethiopia, a country I knew very little about," he said today, August 4. "After just one day here in Gambella, watching the work that GOAL does here, my eyes and mind have been opened more than I could have anticipated.
"It's going to be a fascinating and educational week and it's a humbling privilege to be here."
The broadcaster, who is on the first day of his trip, previously stated that he had asked GOAL if a visit by him would be of benefit to its aid work and when GOAL replied that it would, he held a number of meetings with the organisation and decided to go.
