Ethiopia detains seven suspected human traffickers

Ethiopia’s Federal Police Commission has detained seven suspected human traffickers who were allegedly engaged in illicit human trafficking, official said Tuesday. The suspects were deported from Kenya, Sudan and Tanzania over the past three months in collaboration with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
Head of Illegal Human Trafficking Crime Investigation Division with the Federal Police Commission, Deputy Commander Wondimu Chama said the suspects have allegedly been trafficking citizens illegally by creating a network with traffickers inside the country.
Some 17 traffickers residing in Ethiopia were accordingly detained and brought to justice, he added.
The deputy commander, who revealed the existence of more than 80 human traffickers living in different countries to smuggle Ethiopians, stated that efforts have been made to deport these traffickers.
He further said that the commission has been working with those countries where the human traffickers live and activities are underway to bring them to court.
According to Deputy Commander Wondimu, of the total 366 suspects brought to justice last year most were found guilty.
