Anticipating the occurrence of El Nino, the government of Ethiopia has been making preparations, allocating 700 million Birr to preempt the influence and consequences of the phenomenon in the country, the Ethiopian Herald reported on Friday.The daily state owned newspaper quoted the Government communication Affairs office Head Redwan Husien as saying that due to the influence of El Nino, shortage of rainfall has occurred in some arid areas of the country mainly in east, north east, central and rift valley areas.
Redwan also said as the phenomenon created shortage of pasture, livestock in the aforementioned areas are being affected. The government is well aware of the problem and preparing to provide animal fodder, water and food to affected areas.
“The situation is also predicted to improve in some parts of Ethiopia. In other areas, we expect irregular rainfall next September and October. And one would help another in compensating for the lost produce. Thus, we are trying to use every opportunity that would help in mitigating the effect,� Redwan said.
The government is taking action to create awareness among farmers to keep on ploughing their farmlands using various means.
He indicated that in areas that have done their level best in harvesting water, they have managed to withstand the effects of El Nino while in areas where the performance is low regarding water shade management and harvesting water drop the effect is severe.
The government is also working towards creating awareness on the benefit of engaging in water shade management and using every drop of water to save cattle and protect crop.
