Kenya, Ethiopia in fine form for World Champs
NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYAN athletes and their Ethiopian counterparts have hit top form ahead of the World Championships set for Beijing, China.
This past weekend, Vincent Ruto and Richard Yator grabbed gold medals at the World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia.
Overall, Kenya finished second on the medals table behind the United States of America.
The East African nation amassed 13 medals comprising five gold, four silver and four bronze while the US collected 19 medals (eight gold, five silver and six bronze).
Not to be outdone, Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba produced a stunning run in Friday’s Monaco Diamond League meeting to set a 1 500m world record of three minutes 50.08 seconds.
Dibaba’s compatriot Mohammed Aman, who is the world defending 800m champion, and teenager Yomif Kejelcha always carry Ethiopia’s hopes.
The Kenyan hopefuls and their Ethiopian rival are among stars that are anticipated to continue the great rivalry between the two countries at the World Championships scheduled for the Chinese capital on August 22-30.
