Addis Ababa — The two sides discussed bilateral military cooperation between the two countries.
Major general HalukSahar Chief of Staff of the Republic of Turkey's defense forces and the head of the delegation said his delegation was on a visit to Ethiopia as per invitation extended to him by the Ethiopian counterpart.
According to a press statement sent to the Anadolu Agency by the Turkish Embassy's Military Attaché Office in Addis Ababa, the two sides dwelt on a new military cooperation between the two countries.
The statement said, "Both sides recognized the need to speedily implement a military cooperation the two countries have signed."
A defense industry cooperation agreement was signed between Addis Ababa and Ankara in May 2013. This was followed by Ethiopia's parliament unanimously endorsing it on 31 March 2015.
Official relations between Turkey and Ethiopia began in 1896, when the two states exchanged diplomatic delegations under Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II and Turkish Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II.
According to ENA, the first Ottoman Turkish consulate opened in Harar in 1912; Turkey's first embassy in sub-Saharan Africa was opened in Addis Ababa in 1926.
