It is an undeniable fact that every profession does bring a
significant contribution for any nation intending to realize set
development goals. Specifically, teaching ,which is considered to be the
mother of other professions, plays quite a role in ensuring the
holistic development of citizens. Unlike other professions, teaching
involves investing on the lives of individuals. No doubt investment in
this sector is the best and ever lasting investment.
In supporting the aforementioned view, the American Psychiatrist William James states: " The best way to live is to invest our lives on something that will last; teach this generation in order to determine the fate of the generation to come." Moreover, a glance at the world history indicates that the secrete of the world's civilization and the holistic development of many nations are rooted in the attention accorded to education.
For instance, the world leading economies that based on proper foundation are reported to have made big investment on the head of their citizens. They used to follow a principle of the three H's ( 3H's) that stands for Head, Hand and Heart. The philosophy of this principle resides in the fact that in order to produce a conscious, well mannered, responsible and hard working citizens, it is very crucial to invest on the head that reinforces the development of the hand and heart.
In an analogues fashion, realizing its importance specially for its renaissance journey and gigantic projects like GERD it has in mind, the Ethiopian Government has been implementing an education policy that was carefully and consciously scrutinized and designed in order to ensure Quality Education that in turn reinforces the Ethiopian Renaissance.
The motto of the Ministry of Education: Knowledge ( head), Skills (hand) and character (Heart) that is interpreted as: when proper knowledge or discipline is imparted into the head, the hand will be active or nimble and the character is developed; this is similar to the above philosophy.
In order to ensure the intended Quality Education and realize the Ethiopian Renaissance, it is to be recalled that the Ethiopian Government had introduced a package known as the General Education Quality Improvement Programme (GEQIP). Since the introduction of the programme, several activities that are contributing a great deal to progress have been carried out. Among these, expanding schools and higher institutions are mentioned. For instance, the number of higher institutions has shot up from two to more than thirty-three. The package consists of the six programmes that are implemented at the school environment.
The programme aims at supporting Ethiopia's effort to improve the quality of general education through, among other things, improvements in teaching and learning conditions in primary and secondary institutions as well as management planning and budget capacity of the Ministry of Education and Regional Education Bureaus.
Specific activities include a Teacher Development Programme; curriculum, textbooks and assessment; education management information systems; and a school improvement programme.
The government states that the programme will also contribute to effectively achieving the Education Quality improvement goal and ensuring commitment to not only expanding education across the country, but also to improving the Quality of Education.
It is to be recalled that during an introductory programme, the World Bank's Country Director for Ethiopia Kenichi Ohashi indicated that Ethiopia is on the right track for achieving the Millennium Development Goals in the education sector and expressed appreciation for the efforts being made by the Ethiopian government to ensure Quality Education for all.
Ensuring quality education helps produce skilled human resource at higher levels because the former is the very basis for all progress and enables to lay the foundation. Following its relative, multidimensional and dynamic concept, diverse conceptualization and approaches, quality of education requires firm commitment to reach common understanding on all its components.
Last week, on celebrating the Teacher's Day for the seventh time, the teachers of the Nifas Silk Lafto Woreda 04 pledged to ensure Quality Education in order to accelerate the successful accomplishment of the Ethiopian Renaissance. The central theme of the conference was Teaching Profession for Quality Education and Ethiopian Renaissance. On the conference, the participants and stakeholders were requested to give proper credit for the profession for it determines the success of the Renaissance.
Recruiting, preparing, developing and supporting great teachers has a direct impact on the learning and success of Ethiopia's students. Research confirms that the most important in-school factor in a student's success is a competent and enthused teacher. And excellent teachers are especially important for neediest students, according to the participants.
The government also believes that we need to give schools the resources to keep good teachers on the job and reward the best ones, and give teachers the flexibility to teach with creativity and passion. He also stated that the government is laying out a plan to strengthen teachers' training programmes.
However, currently, the ministry and other stakeholders have known the existing conditions. And the Ministry of Education realizes this fact and has been taking multifaceted measures and exhaustively working to ensure quality of Ethiopian primary education ranging from recruiting to training of teachers. As the issue of quality is very complicated, the Government is doing its level best to improve Quality Education in the sated level.
Explaining the influence teachers can make, Gilbert Highet in his book, The Art of Teaching, states: "Some of the most important men in history have been teachers. Many of the biggest advances in civilization have been the chief work, not of politicians or inventors, not even of artists, but of teachers."
Careful analysis of the world history indicates that the Western civilization is the product of the teachings of Greek Philosophers. The influence of the Greek Philosophers has been far wider, stronger and more varied than others.
The greatest teachers in history, who laid foundations for civilizations of the modern world, include Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Plato was the pupil of Socrates and the teacher of the Aristotle who was the teacher Alexander the Great. Experts agree that the teaching of Socrates became practical in the life of Alexander the Great who led Greece. And the Greece influenced the world as a result.
Thus, the Ethiopian Government believes that the teachers shall absolutely determine the Ethiopian Renaissance through their profession. Readying the coming generations for Ethiopian Renaissance via a Quality Education is a task that must be inexorably pursued.
