ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA
The Ethiopian Football Federation will terminate national team coach Mariano Barreto's contract at the end of the month.
The EFF said Barreto will leave by mutual agreement halfway through his two-year contract.
EFF spokesman Wondimkun Alayou said the Portuguese coach hasn't made enough progress with the team and "was not worth the amount of money that he is being paid."
He said Barreto is being paid $18,000 a month and will receive three months' salary as a severance payment.
Before Barreto took over, Ethiopia qualified for the 2013 African Cup of Nations and nearly made it to the 2014 World Cup. Under Baretto, it missed out on this year's African Cup, winning just one of six games in the main group stage in qualifying.
The federation hasn't named a replacement but said it expects to appoint an Ethiopian coach.
Qualifying for the 2017 African Cup in Gabon begins in June, with Ethiopia in a group with top-ranked African team Algeria, Lesotho and Seychelles. Only the group winner qualifies automatically.
