Addis Ababa, 22 November 2014 (WIC) - Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn said the government is providing wide-ranging supports to make the upcoming national election free, fair and credible.
While conferring with European Union Great Lake Countries Director, Koen Veruaeke, the premier said the government is working hard to create a plain field for all parties and make the election participatory so that the election could be free and fair.
“We are conducting a free, fair and credible election not because the European Union asked us, but because one has to be faithful to the Ethiopian people and to the exercise of building a democratic system,” Hailemariam stressed. “The fairness of the election would be determined by the process,” the premier said, adding that the government is therefore prepared to properly meet its responsibilities from the pre-election period.
“Outsiders should also realize that the government is working consciously as it knows that this is a fundamental issue for the future of the Ethiopian people,” he elaborated. The European Union Great Lake Countries Director Koen Veruaeke on his part recalled that Ethiopia and the European Union have been collaborating in political spheres, besides the broad cooperation in economic and social affairs.
The director added that he had discussions with the premier about the freedom of movement of the electorate and political parties, but a decision has not yet been reached on how the union could support the upcoming election. “It is the desire of not only the government of Ethiopia but also of the union to see free, fair and credible election,” the director pointed out, adding that it is a huge contribution to the democratic system building in the country and both parties would collaborate for that. Besides the government, opposition parties have also a huge responsibility to make the election acceptable to the electorate, he concluded.
