Gebo Burka Gemade of Ethiopia, Clara Santucci of Dilliner win the 2014 Pittsburgh Marathon

Gebo Burka Gemade of Ethiopia wins the 2014 Pittsburgh Marathon with an unofficial time of 2:16:30.
Clara Santucci of Dilliner, Greene County, is the women's champion.
An estimated 30,000 runners participated in the 26.2-mile race. Pittsburgh police reported no significant traffic issues, although the approaching start of the Pirates' baseball game on the North Shore is starting to create some backups.

At noon, there were only a few thousand participants still on the course. Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said the city's Public Works Department is working with police to reopen streets after they have been cleaned.
Pittsburgh Emergency Medical Services reported having transported 20 individuals, although none of those had life-threatening issues.
There was a one-alarm fire in the 800 block of Hale Street in Homewood late this morning. Ms. Toler said the fire began in a vacant duplex and spread to the adjoining structure where the resident was not at home. This scene was two blocks northeast of the marathon route and did not disturb the race, though the smoke was visible to runners and spectators.
According to the Los Angeles radio station KNX10.70, Mr. Gemade, 27, was the elite winner of the Los Angeles Marathon in March, where he clocked his best time since a 2:10:18 in Cannes, France, five years ago. Through an interpreter, he said he had been sick the previous three years but had since returned feeling strong.
“(Through) the instruction of my coach, I cut my amount of exercise, so I was able to save me energy and accomplish my goals,” Mr. Gemade said.
According to Runners World, Ms. Santucci, who ran a 2:29:54 for her marathon debut in Boston in 2011 and was the top American woman in Chicago last October with a ninth-place in 2:31:29, was the top-rated American in today's Pittsburgh Marathon.
At the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, Ms. Santucci placed seventh with a time of 2:30:46, Runners World said. This year, she set a personal half-marathon best twice, running 1:12:58 at the USA Championships in Houston and 1:12:21 at the World Half Marathon Championships in Denmark.
Ms. Santucci, 27, spent much of her childhood living in a one-room schoolhouse and was home-schooled by her mother, Runners World said. While attending West Virginia University just 12 miles from Dilliner in Morgantown, she placed fourth in the 2010 NCAA Championships 10,000 meters. Ms. Santucci is still coached by her college mentor, Sean Cleary, training on trails along Monongahela River.
In September, Ms. Santucci was the top female finisher in the 2013 Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race.
“I’m very happy,” said Ms. Santucci, who finished that race with a time of 32:54. “I knew downhill was going to be fast, so I wanted to PR. My 10K PR on the track was 33:16 in college. I broke 33 and that was my goal.”
