60 arrested so far in Ethiopia’s largest anti-corruption sweep

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — Ethiopia’s largest ever anti-corruption sweep has led to arrest of another five senior officials of Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service Enterprise (ESLSE), state media has reported.
The arrest of the five suspects brings the number of brokers, business people and government officials arrested over anti-corruption allegations to 60.
Among the suspects arrested are Chief Engineer Alemu Ambaye, Deputy CEO of Shipping sector at ESLSE and Samuel Melaku, Finance Head of ESLSE, according to a report by state media Radio Fana.
The anti-corruption sweep has so far led to the arrest of a Brigadier General, a Deputy Minister of Ethiopia Finance and Economic Cooperation and former head of Ethiopian Roads Authority.
The Ethiopian Government has indicated that the large-scale anti-corruption investigation and arrest of high-profile individuals is part of the Ethiopian government’s reform agenda, which was started at the end of 2016 following mass protests in different parts of the country.
The Ethiopian government has since then stressed bad-governance and corruption among the major reasons for the preoccupations of the public that rocked the east African country back in late 2016. Read more here
