January 31, 2017 - Priti Patel, the UK minister for International Development, is in Addis Ababa to attend the AU summit, according to teh Reporter.
The minister is scheduled to meet with Ethiopian government officials and discuss bilateral issues.
During her visit, Minister Patel plans to meet with Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn, Foreign Minister Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD) and Arekebe Oqubay (PhD), board chairman of the Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IDPC).
She also plans to visit the Hawassa Industrial Park, where several renowned multinational corporations are installing textile machineries.
Priti Patel, a vocal critic of her country's aid spending, recently ended DFID’s funding for an Ethiopian project, Yegna.
Yegna is a radio program that aspires to bring about women’s empowerment through positive behavioral change.
Her visit to the Hawassa Industrial Park could be one sign of her preference to trade over aid.
Ethiopia is the largest recipient of UK bilateral Official Development Assistance (ODA) – GBP 322 million in 2014. Ethiopia has been among the top five recipients of UK aid for the last five years. (Reporter)
