University of Bradford works with Ethiopia to hold major pan African conference on peace

The University of Bradford is to co-host a major conference in Ethiopia seeking to establish peace studies in mainstream education throughout the African continent.
The conference, Global Education for Peace in Africa, takes place on Thursday and Friday, 23-24 June 2016 at the UN Economic Commission for Africa Conference Hall in Addis Ababa, and will be a highlight of the University’s 50th anniversary.
Organised in partnership with the government of Ethiopia, the conference will explore ways to work with the African Union to ensure that peace studies becomes an integral part of the school curriculum throughout the 54 members states of the union.
Speakers at the conference will include the Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia, and University of Bradford alumni, Dr Demeke Mekonnen, alongside Bradford Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Cantor and Professor Donna Lee, Dean of the University’s Faculty of Social Sciences.
Professor David Francis, Head of the Department of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford, and one of the organisers of the conference, said: “This will be a ground-breaking conference that will have a major impact on policy and practice throughout Africa.
“The University of Bradford is delighted to be centrally involved, alongside the government of Ethiopia, in organising such a high profile coming together of nations from across Africa and we have high hopes that the outcome of the conference will have a lasting influence on education and the development of peace throughout the continent.”
