Addis Ababa, 20 June 2016 (WIC) – The Ministry of Farming and Natural Resource Development has announced that it has planned to collect more than 300 million quintals of agricultural produce in the main cropping season of the country, Mehir.
Public Relation Bureau Head of the Ministry, Alemayew Birhanu, told Walta Information Center that the Ministry expects to collect more than 300 million quintals of agricultural produce in the 2016/17 cropping season.
According to Alemayew, more than 12 million hectares of land have planted with different varieties of crops.
He said that the country has distributed necessary agricultural inputs including 12 million quintals of fertilizers and 1.5 million quintals of selected seeds in order to attain its target for the season.
In a move to stand the impact of Eli Niño, the country has cultivated more than 2.2 million hectares of land during the past Belg season expecting to harvest 99 million quintals of agricultural produce, said the spokes person of the ministry.
Based on information obtained from the ministry, Ethiopia harvests more than 80 percent of its agricultural produce during Mehir cropping season.
Ethiopia aspires to register an agriculture growth rate of eight percent during the course of the second Growth and Transformation Plan that will conclude in 2020.
