Ethiopia set to commence overseas recruitment programs

Ethiopia is set to begin selection of agencies to commence overseas recruitment programs within the coming two months, the country’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs announced Thursday. The country has banned overseas employment one and half year ago after a number of its citizens suffered a number of accidents including death in Middle East countries.
The country’s national parliament in December, 29, 2015 approved the amended proclamation on overseas employment, lifting the ban of traveling to Middle East countries.
The proclamation was supposed to be implemented within three months after its approval.
“Implementation of the proclamation was delayed due to failure to finalize the Ministry’s structure and other related bilateral works with stakeholders,â€ said Demena Dalota, State Minister of Labor and Social Affairs.
However, all works have been finalized now and the Ministry is ready to start the recruitment program after choosing agencies, he said.
Dr Kesetebirhan Admasu, Minister of Health (MoH), said his ministry has finalized preparations to provide a medical check-up service in selected health institutions for workers going to abroad seeking jobs.
Medical check-up service for overseas recruitment was previously handled by the Ethiopian Gulf Approved Medical Centers Association (GAMCA).
