The 28th Ordinary Session of the Africa Union Executive Council kicked off Wednesday at the AU Headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, as a prelude to the next AU heads of State and Governments `summit scheduled to open here on Saturday.
The Session which is being held under the theme: “2016: African Year of Human Rights with a particular focus on the Rights of Women” is due to prepare the agenda of the Summit with appropriate recommendations for consideration by the heads of state.
The ministers of foreign affairs and other authorities duly designated by member states, began their deliberations on the different items on the agenda including the consideration of the report of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC); the Annual Report of the Chairperson of the Commission for the period January to December 2015 and the revised AUC budget for the 2016 Financial Year.
The Executive Council is further expected to consider the report of the Ad-hoc Ministerial Committee on the Scale of Assessment; the Ministerial Committee on African Candidatures in the International System; the progress report of the Ministerial Committee on the Challenges of Ratification/Accession and Implementation of the OAU/AU Treaties; the follow up Committee on Agenda 2063; and the report of the Ministerial Committee on Elections of the Members of the Commission in June/July 2016.
Among the anticipated high moments during the Executive Council will be the election and appointment of the fifteen (15) members of the Peace and Security Council and that of one (1) member of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC).
The meeting of the Executive Council will officially end on Thursday.
