Save the Children on Thursday called for more support from the international community to mitigate severe drought in Ethiopia.
The call was made by John Graham, Save the Children-Ethiopia Country Director who said the aid agency has identified over 60 worst affected districts in Ethiopia which need urgent support.
According to the director, the aid agency has been working to raise funds amounting to $30 million to facilitate supply of food aid in the worst affected areas.
The country director called for international assistance following his visit to the drought affected areas in Ethiopia.
He praised efforts by the Ethiopian government to minimize the impact of the drought that is affecting the lives of millions of children and families. But more global support is needed to lessen the impact, he said.
The Director explained that CEOs from Save the Children Finland, Norway and USA have witnessed positive impacts brought about by the provision of water, sanitation and hygiene programs in containing the spread of diseases.
The visiting team also witnessed the role of alternative income generating activities in supporting people whose livelihoods have been affected by the drought in Afar and Amhara regions.
According to the director, the agency has allocated $40 million to deliver emergency food aid to over 250,000 people and offer treatment to children malnourished due to the drought.
