Debasu Bayleyegn, Public Relations Director at the ministry on Saturday said that a range of carbon reducing schemes have been devised to bring down emissions to 145 metric tons by 2030.
The fast economic growth coupled with expansion of industries is believed to contribute to the raise in emission levels in Ethiopia.
According to the director, with the distribution of energy saving stoves and preventing deforestation, the government plans to bring down emission levels of greenhouse gases.
The country is even pursuing an ambitious target of achieving zero carbon emission. The target encompasses building climate resilient green economy.
The Country’s Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity is also popularizing the use of alternative energy sources in rural areas.

The government believes that through the promotion of alternative energy sources along with wider distribution of energy saving stoves, it will achieve the desired outcome in reducing emissions.
According to Debasu, distribution of energy saving house utensils contributes to the reduction of 50 metric tons of carbon.
Accordingly, the last budget year saw the distribution of 6.4 million improved energy saving utensils which saved 96 thousand hectares of land from deforestation.
