The construction of the Genale Dawa 3 hydropower plant in Ethiopia has reached 79 percent completion, the Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) announced on Friday.Misker Negash, Foreign Relations Director at EEP said works are underway to finalize the 254mw hydropower project according to plan.
The project is being built at a cost of $451 million allocated by the government of Ethiopia and loan obtained from China’s Exim Bank.
Ethiopia’s current total electric power generating capacity stands at 2,421mw and efforts are underway to raise the figure to 17,000mw over the next five years.
Ethiopia has the potential to generate 50,000mw from hydropower, 1.3 million mw from wind and more than 10,000mw from geothermal energy.
