The Ethiopian Muslim Affairs Supreme Council (EMASC) has said the number of compatriots who died from the recent hajj stampede at Mina, Saudi Arabia, has jumped to over 30.In a statement the EMASC circulated on Monday, the council indicated that 31 Ethiopians were confirmed dead until Sunday.
The council noted that a committee that consists of physicians, the Ethiopian Diaspora and public relations officers has been formed to investigate the death toll by touring hospitals in different parts of Saudi Arabia where bodies were being deposited.
It further said that over 1,100 Ethiopian pilgrims have returned safely from the hajj over the past two days.
The council has expressed its deep regret to families of the victims over their deaths.
Some 10,000 Ethiopians went on the pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia this year.
