UNDP donates equipment to Ethiopia’s meteorological agency

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has handed nearly $2 million worth of equipment to the National Meteorological Agency of Ethiopia.
In a statement issued on Friday, the equipment, including 40 automatic weather stations, are expected to help strengthen Ethiopia’s early warning network to monitor, generate data and feed into early warning systems as well as inform national climate resilient development planning.
In Ethiopia, UNDP implements a four-year $4.5m programme with financing from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Least Developed Country Fund (LDCF).
“By the end of the four year project, the number of people who have access to an improved early warning system and climate information will have grown from six million female and 8 million male to 9 and 12 million respectively the statement added.
The frequency of data collection and transmission will also improve from a monthly to a daily basis. Ethiopia’s meteorological stations are also expected to have increased from 1,000 manual and 70 automatic to 1,240 and 110 respectively.
Hydrological stations with telemetry are also expected to increase from 4 to 64, while on the other hand the number of manual stations will decrease from 489 to 439, the statement said.
Along with the NMA, UNDP executes the programme in partnership with the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy as well as the Ministry of Agriculture’s Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Sector, the statement concludes.
