Partners to Strengthen Support to Green Economy Strategy


Some development partners of Ethiopia have expressed their readiness for the realization of the country's Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) Strategy.
This was disclosed at a discussion the Ministry of Environment and Forest held with development partners here Tuesday.
Minister Belete Tafere said the government plans to undertake climate resilient green economy strategy as an integral part of the Second Growth and Transformation Plan.
The discussion was aimed at bringing real change in reducing carbon emission in the Second Growth and Transformation Plan by working with development partners in an organized and integrated manner, he said.
Norway and the United Kingdom have been supporting Ethiopia's Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy for the past four years, while Germany, Sweden, France and Denmark have signed agreement to work on climate change, he said.
Delegation of European Union to Ethiopia, Ambassador Chantal Hebberecht praised the Government of Ethiopia for its commitment in climate change mainstreaming.
"We really appreciate and encourage your work to undertake climate mainstreaming in GTP-2", she noted.
European Union has been supporting Ethiopia's climate resilient economy strategy, she said, adding that the Union would further strength its support in this area.
Norwegian Embassy Counselor on Climate Change, Anders Vatn said Norway supports Ethiopia's Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy.
Ethiopia has been playing a leading role in Africa in all sectors, including addressing climate change, Vatn said.
Working on global issues like a climate change is significant for Africa to eradicate poverty, since the continent has many resources and low carbon emission in the world, he noted.
United States Ambassador to Ethiopia, Patricia Haslach on her part stated that the activity Ethiopia has been undertaking in renewable energy portrays the country's commitment in fighting climate change.
To make the strategy fruitful, the support of all countries is needed, Haslach added.
Environment and Forest Minister Belete said on his part "My country is highly grateful for all the cooperation and support it is getting from its development partners in the implementation of the CRGE and REDD+".
Ethiopia has registered successful achievements in addressing issues of climate change through its Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy and the country has the opportunity to work more in this area, he indicated.
