Ethiopia has launched its National Logistic Strategy tailored to
improving its overall logistic operating system and enhancing
international competitiveness. The Strategy is intended to address up to
100 logistic challenges including inefficient infrastructure and payment
systems as well as freight forwarding and custom services, Mekonnen
Abera, Director General of the Ethiopian Maritime Affairs Authority said
on Friday.
Despite infrastructure improvement, Ethiopia’s logistics Performance Index score, as calculated by the World Bank, is below sub-Saharan African countries standing at 3.6 which is a 1.4 below the sub-Saharan Logistic performance.
In its logistic performance rating, the World Bank ranked Ethiopia 104 out of 160 countries.
The country also ranks 132 out of 189 countries measured by the bank’s “ease of doing business.â€
As implementation of the keeps going, payments for logistics and regulatory services as well as for the duties and taxes associated with foreign trade will be made through electronic fund transfers while electronic signatures will be used to complete the related transactions.
The current restrictions on availability of foreign exchange will be removed over time as the large outflows associated with public infrastructure projects decline and export earnings increase, the strategy document has stated.
UNDP assisted logistic strategy is designed to help Ethiopia be able to achieve middle income status in a decade and provide the basis for continued growth after 2025.
