Tripartite talks over Ethiopia dam kick off in Khartoum

Tripartite talks over Ethiopia dam kick off in Khartoum
Foreign Minister Sameh Shokry - YOUM7
CAIRO: Foreign Minister Sameh Shokry said Egypt seeks “new and unprecedented cooperation” with the eastern Nile Basin countries to reach an agreement for the mutual interests of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia, Youm7 reported Wednesday.
Shokry and Irrigation Minister Hossam Moghazi headed to Khartoum Monday for tripartite talks with Ethiopian and Sudanese officials to resolve the dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Damproject. Egypt has constantly expressed its opposition to any project that might disrupt the flow of the Nile.
“Egypt spares no effort to take part in achieving common goals and aspiration of the peoples of the eastern Nile basin states. We hope to get the best use of our mutual natural resources through developing optimal strategies of cooperation and integration between us,” said Shokry in the opening session of the meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia that kicked off Tuesday.
During the past two years and since the construction of the dam that kicked off in 2013, the three countries have held several tripartite meetings to discuss the ways to maximize the benefits of the dam, minimize its side effects and reduce the potential risk on the three countries.
“Egypt is open to any possible solution in dealing with the issue and securing its annual water share, estimated at 55.5 billion cubic meters according to the 1959 agreement signed with Sudan,” said Shokry.
