Some 125 Ethiopian would-be migrants detained in Tanzania while trying to cross to South Africa have been returned to the country, APA can report Friday.
The returnees were held in Tanzanian prisons for more than four months before the International Organization for Migration (IOM) intervened for their return to Ethiopia.
The IOM offices in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Yemen provided assistance to the returnees.
However, the returnees from Yemen were stranded while trying to cross the country illegally to reach the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
They were intercepted after crossing the Red Sea in Yemen where they were detained in Yemeni prisons for three months before their return.
In 2014, 828 Ethiopian migrants have returned from Yemen and, 598 Ethiopians have also returned from Tanzania in the same year.
The returnees comprise 54 individuals from Tanzania and 71 from Yemen.
Six of the returnees from Tanzania were Unaccompanied Minors (UAMs) while all of the returnees from Yemen belonged to the same category.
IOM has provided a pre-departure, medical check-up, accommodation, meal and transportation in Tanzania, Yemen and Ethiopia.
The IOM Special Liaison Office in Ethiopia has provided on-arrival assistance to all returnees, including meal and onward transportation, the organization said in a statement seen by APA on Friday.
In addition, IOM, UNICEF and the Ethiopian Ministry of Women Children and Youth Affairs are conducting family tracing for reunification for unaccompanied minors.
UAMs are being provided with meal and accommodation at the IOM Transit Center in Addis Ababa.
