Ethiopian Minister of Defense Siraj Fegassa and Ethiopia's National
Intelligence Chief, getachew Assefa met with Abdirahman Mahdi, head of
Foreign Relations of the ONLF and Mohamed Abdi Yasin, Secretary of the
ONLF. The two sides agreed most the principles of the dialogue.
The
Ogaden National Liberation Front ONLF and Ethiopia government have
resumed in Nairobi, Kenya today, Ogaden News Agency reported.
Ethiopian
Minister of Defense Siraj Fegassa and Ethiopia's National Intelligence
Chief, getachew Assefa met with Abdirahman Mahdi, head of Foreign
Relations of the ONLF and Mohamed Abdi Yasin, Secretary of the ONLF. The
two sides agreed most the principles of the dialogue.
International Community is pressuring both of them to continue the talks in part of solving decades of conflict in the Ogaden.
Kenya-brokered
peace talks between ONLF and Ethiopia stalled in October 17, 2012
following ONLF's refusal to accept a pre-condition imposed by Ethiopian
negotiation team, which was a violation to initial agreement.
The
Ogaden conflict is regarded one of the longest wars in the history of
Africa. More than 500, 000 people have died, and more than a million
have fled from the region.There are 100,000 Ogaden refugees in Kenya and
3,000 in Yemen, of whom 2,500 are registered with UNHCR in Sanaa.
Around 100 families from Ogaden live in Al-Kharez Refugee camp in the
South of Yemen, registered with UN as refugees from Somalia.
Human rights Watch has accused the Ethiopian government of systematically cracking down on media ahead of the may 2015 election.
ONLF
was founded in 1984, and it has been engaging army struggle with the
Ethiopian troops stationed in Ogaden since 1994, after the Ethiopian
government cracked down its members following after the first ever
legitimate Ogaden Parliament overwhelmingly voted yes for
self-determination.
Ogaden
borders Djibouti,Oromia, Kenya and Somalia . The people are
predominantly ethnic Somali and Muslim. The region was Italian and
English-colony but in 1954, the English handed over to Ethiopia.
