Ethio-Djibouti Railway 98 % Finalized

Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC) announced Ethio-Djibouti railway is readied for full service by next year. Installation work for the railway is now 98 percent finalized.
90 percent of Ethiopia’s import – export trade is undertaken via Djibouti. Thus full functioning of the rail transport will avoid delays in the transport of goods.
The electrified railway in addition to cutting transportation time, it will save foreign currency that would have been spent on diesel fuel and also reduce air pollution.
Dereje Tefera, Communication Service Officer at ERC, explained Ethiopia had highly investing on infrastructure to improve its transport accessibility.
1,171 wagons and locomotives were needed to commence full service on the Ethio-Djibouti railway line, Dereje noted. The wagons have the capacity to transport 3,500 tons at once. The locomotives on the other hand can hit 120 kilometers per hour while carrying 113 to 168 passengers with different facilities they offer; beds, kitchen, VIP seats, toilets and others.
The entire railway had 19 stations and construction of these stations has been concluded, Dereje explained.
