Construction work at Ethiopia’s controversial dam reaches half way- Sources

Ethiopia’s controversial dam being built on the River Nile has now reached at a height of 75 meters while the divergent views between Ethiopia and Egypt over the impact of the dam against the latter have not yet been resolved, APA learns here Tuesday.
The construction of the dam, which has gone more than halfway now, has a total height of 145 meters. In addition to the construction of the dam, installation of various infrastructures is also underway at the dam site, located approximately 20 kilometres east of the Sudanese border in the Benishangul-Gumuz State of Ethiopia.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project is being jointly executed by the Ethiopian Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC), France and an Italian industrial group, Salini Impregilo.
Giving a progress report on the construction, Engineer Simegnew Bekele, Project Manager of the dam said intensive works are going on to complete it as scheduled.
The project involves the construction of a main dam in Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC), with two power stations comprising16 Francis turbines with a total installed power of 6,000 MW and estimated production of 15,700 GWh per year.
The dam is presumed to be the largest dam in Africa after completion.
