Morocco Rejoins the African Union
January 31, 2017 - Morocco rejoined the African Union this week. The 28th AU Summit of Heads of State and Government accepted the formal application submitted by Morocco for to rejoin the Union after 33 years of withdrawal, according to ENA.
Morocco withdrew from the Continental organization following the admission to the organization of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in 1984 which Morocco considered as part of her territory.
Morocco applied for readmission in July 2016 on the 27th Summit of AU heads of State and Government which convened in Kigali, Rwanda.
After discussing on the agenda, AU member countries decided to readmit Morocco to the continental organization.
Morocco formally recognized the membership of Saharawi Democratic Republic’s membership to AU.
Thirty nine of the 53 member states of AU have voted in favor of Morocco while Algeria and South Africa voted against. (ENA)
