Ethiopia distributes one million quintals of selected seeds farmers

More than one million quintals of selected seeds is being distributed to farmers for the upcoming growing seasons, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources said Wednesday. Seeds of fast growing vegetables and root crops have already been distributed among farmers faced with food shortage due to drought, the ministry stated.
Agriculture Inputs and Supply Senior Expert with the ministry, Endale Gudeta said that the ministry is distributing selected seeds and fertilizer that will be used during the main rainy season and other seasons.
According to Endale, the plan is to distribute over 1.2 million quintals of selected seeds that will be utilized for agricultural activities during this Ethiopian fiscal year through the federal and regional governments.
The amount of supplied selected seeds is high when compared with that of the previous year, the senior expert said, adding that the aim is to compensate for the shortage of harvest farmers faced due to climate change.
Over two million fast growing seeds of sweet potato have already been distributed to farmers since last March, he added.
According to information obtained from the ministry, the plan is to harvest more than 99 million quintals by cultivating some 2.2 million hectares of land after the main rainy season.
